Fresh analysis reveals that people who discontinue popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.
Research printed in a leading health publication shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Individuals purchasing such medications must be aware of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery means a return to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Approaches
The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.
The team point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually experience a more gradual creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Understanding the Quick Regain
Doctors propose the mechanism of the injections explains the heightened weight return.
The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this medication leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."
An Ongoing Issue?
Health authorities advise the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals argue that, due to the likelihood of relapse, the treatment should be considered ongoing.
This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have come off the medication report a sudden resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced something that goes on and you become ravenous," said a patient.
The struggle is exacerbated if patients have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Growing Adoption
Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts caution that while the jabs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss hinges on combined behavioural support.
