British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a coordinated attack against an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the IS group, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The site, identified by reconnaissance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was located in hills just north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a series of entry passages providing entry to the site... preliminary assessments are that the strike was effective," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the attack late on Saturday and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established extremist governance over large swathes of Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation demonstrates British leadership, and determination to work closely with our allies, to eliminate any revival of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the region," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary remarked.

British military aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of Islamic State subsequent to its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank the personnel of our armed forces participating in this operation for their skill and their valour," Healey said. "They were part of a great many British personnel on duty over the holidays. This mission, to take out militants who pose a risk to our safety, highlights how UK forces are always on standby, all year round, ensuring Britain's security domestically and influential overseas."

During December, the American forces carried out what it termed a "massive strike" on IS targets in the country, after an attack claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. estimates IS still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
