A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the rapidity and management of the country's major government projects.
The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify what caused this tragedy,” declared the country's president.
The official announced that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The leader noted plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose presidency ended the prior year. This rail line was a hallmark of his government's developmental agenda for the southern region.
Another massive rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The development of both train projects was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic growth of its responsibilities in public infrastructure. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, beating forecasts to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had also sparked persistent apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an previous collision this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Audit and Pause
In the wake of the disaster, the head of a major opposition party demanded an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was suggested while awaiting a full independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."
In reply, the national leader insisted that the train had been operating in full compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these strategic initiatives.
